Vincent N. Mosesso, Jr., M.D. is an associate professor in the department of emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and medical director of prehospital care services for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  Dr. Mosesso was the founder and Medical Director of the National Center for Early Defibrillation at the University of Pittsburgh, which is now transitioning to an independent non-profit called the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association.  He serves on the American Heart Association’s national basic life support subcommittee and as advanced cardiac life support regional faculty.  He is also assistant medical director of the City of Pittsburgh Emergency Medical Services (EMS), director of the prehospital care rotation of the University of Pittsburgh’s Affiliated Residency in Emergency Medicine and a medical command physician for the UPMC emergency medical consultation and EMS command center.  He is a team emergency physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After completing his bachelor’s degree in classics and philosophy at Duquesne University in 1979, he began his medical training as an EMT Paramedic at Community College of Allegheny County.  He served for ten years as a volunteer paramedic with his local community EMS service, including as paramedic coordinator and on the board of directors.  He also worked as a full-time medic for four years.  He then advanced his medical education and received his medical degree from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine in 1988.  Dr. Mosesso completed his residency training in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991, followed by a teaching fellowship at the Emergency Medicine Foundation/American College of Emergency Physicians in Dallas.

Dr. Mosesso has focused much of his academic research in prehospital care, including the role of police and first responders on the use of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) for the treatment of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, prehospital administration of the clot busting drug Retavase by paramedics, and examining the role of EMS in public health initiatives. He was the principal investigator for the Pittsburgh site of two multi-center trials, the NIH funded Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) trial and the Auto-Pulse Assisted Prehospital International Resuscitation (ASPIRE) Trial. He has co-authored more than 40 referred scientific manuscripts and textbook chapters related to emergency medicine and sudden cardiac arrest. His published articles have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Emergency Medicine, Resuscitation, Journal of the Emergency Medical Services, and Prehospital Emergency Care. 
 
Among his professional memberships is the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), where he was named a fellow in 1994. He is also a member of the National Association of EMS Physicians and served on their Board of Directors for 2002-2004.  Others include the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the American Heart Association.  He is national medical director for the National Association of EMTs’ Advanced Medical Life Support Course.

Dr. Mosesso was recognized as Emergency Physician of the Year in 1998 by the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council. Other honors include the Faculty Appreciation Award by the residents of the University of Pittsburgh Affiliated Residency in Emergency Medicine; the Jean Hollister Award for Excellence in Prehospital Care; the Ronald Stewart Teaching Award, American Heart Association Volunteer of the Year, and the Physician Recognition Award by the Emergency Medical Services Institute of Western Pennsylvania.

Dr Mosesso is a native of the Pittsburgh area and currently resides in Upper St Clair, PA with his wife Janet.  His son Chad is a student at Virginia Tech University and step-daughter Jennifer resides in San Jose, CA.
