Newsletter 2005

Newsletter-November/December 2005 (posted December 28th, 2005)

The AMLS Executive Committee participated in a successful annual pre-conference workshop in New Orleans at EMS EXPO in August.  More than 60 participants attended the provider course.

The AMLS program continued to flourish in 2005.  The number of provider courses doubled compared to 2004, with a total of more than 10,000 participants who have taken the course worldwide.  There are now more than 1,200 instructors and 100 affiliate faculty.  To date, 25 classes are registered for 2006.

AMLS has expanded the international course offerings in 2005.  Countries now actively teaching AMLS include Trinidad/Tobago, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.  Norway hosted its inaugural course in November 2005.

The textbook and instructor guide authors are working on the 3rd revision of the AMLS texts, with a potential release date of fall 2006.

If AMLS is not being taught in your state, contact Keshia Robinson at the NAEMT office for details on how to bring this highly interactive courses to your area.  Be sure to check out the AMLS.org Web site for additional information and course activity.

The AMLS Executive Committee would like to thank all the volunteers who offered their kindness and expertise in caring for the victims of the recent hurricanes in all the southern states that were affected by these disasters.  We continue to keep all the victims and the rescuers who are involved in the ongoing cleanup and rebuilding process in our thoughts and prayers.

Newsletter-September/October 2005 (posted October 22nd, 2005)

The AMLS National Executive committee would like to extend our prayers and hopes for a rapid recovery and rebuilding of the Gulf Coast areas that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  For all our colleagues involved in the search, rescue, recovery and care of those in crisis, we offer our sincere appreciation for your efforts and perseverance to assist in protecting those in need during that tragic time.  We congratulate and thank NAEMT President Ken Bouvier, the board of directors and the NAEMT staff for their wisdom in achieving assistance for all of the participants.

The annual AMLS preconference workshop was a great success.  Sixty-four participants successfully completed the course.  Our international participants were from Mexico, France, Italy and Norway.  This exponential increase attendance signifies the pattern of growth for AMLS during 2005.  As of July 2005, the AMLS program currently recognizes 6,200 providers, 1,200 instructors and 100 affiliate faculty.  States hosting inaugural courses in 2005 are Mississippi and Hawaii.  Seven remaining states are not currently teaching AMLS.  The committee will be marketing to those states in 2006.  International colleagues hosting inaugural courses this year were:  Trinidad/Tobago, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and in late fall, Norway, Mexico, France and Pavia, Italy, are planning courses in 2006.

The third revision of the AMLS textbook and instructor manual are scheduled for release in late fall 2006.  New NAEMT AMLS course slides will accompany this revision.  All course coordinators and affiliate faculty will receive a notice when the revised products are available.

The committee is exploring AMLS Provider Course CME opportunities through ASTNA for registered nurses and for physicians and physician assistants through the Family Practice Physician organizations.  Application information will be Web based, and we will keep you informed of the progress on this initiative.

As a reminder, the length of recognition for all NAEMT course disciplines, including AMLS, was changed to four years in March 2005.

Thank you to all the instructors, affiliate faculty and course sites for implementing AMLS into your continuing education program venues in 2005.  We are looking forward to an exciting 2006.

Newsletter-July/August 2005 (posted July 25th, 2005)

The AMLS EC has been busy with development of the AMLS course on an international basis.  Vince Mosesso MD, AMLS medical director, and Rosemary Adam, AMLS EC member, traveled in April to just north of London, England, where the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield hosted the first AMLS courses in Great Britain.

The University of Hertfordshire invited 10 key EMS and healthcare Instructors from Ireland, England and Portugal to become AMLS Instructors.  They then hosted an AMLS Provider course with approximately 20 participants where these new Instructors were monitored as they taught their first course.  Future development of courses in these European countries is being coordinated through the NAEMT office and the AMLS EC.  Mosesso and Adam would like to thank all of the new Instructors and Providers, but especially our hosts: Andy Newton, senior lecturer and professional lead for paramedics; and Guillaume Alinier, MPhys, our course coordinator.

At the direction of Karla Reid and Curt Pierre, the Emergency Medical Institute of Trinidad/Tobago hosted the inaugural AMLS course in April.  AMLS Chairperson Linda Abrahamson and AMLS EC member John GReg Clarkes assisted in the coordinator and monitoring of this class.  Participants included EMT Basics, paramedics, nurses and physicians.  Abrahamson and Clarkes were asked to serve as diplomats for EMS providers and educators by meeting with Trinidad's Minister of Health, the Honorable John Rahael.  They also met with Helmer Hillwig, MD, EMS medical director at Mount Hope Hospital in Trinidad.  Discussion supported their efforts to establish legislation to identify scopes of practice, primary and continuing eudcation for pre-hosital care providers and regulations for ambulances.

The NAEMT and AMLS EC coordinated the second annual Provider/Instructor course at the 91 Whiskey conference for miltiary coordinators in San Antonio, Texas, in May.  Forthy-eight military personnel participated in teh Provider/Instructor course.

The EC is currently working on the third revision of the course and instructor manual to be released late next year.  The EC welcomes nine new affiliate faculty members: Chris Haber, Pennsylvania; Janice Posey, Louisiana; Carl Lind, ARizona; Barbaba Brennan, Hawaii; Brad Shaw, Missouri; Joe Kelly, New Jersey; Larry Vandegriff, Georgia; Lori Reeves, Iowa; and Craig Jacobus, Nebraska.
