AMLS Releases 3rd Edition Materials:
The AMLS Executive Committee released the 3rd edition AMLS course and Instructor materials at the NAEMT Annual Meeting in Las Vegas. The preconference workshop utilized the revised PowerPoint slides, scenarios and written evaluations.
The Committee would like to thank the volunteer faculty: Judith Ruple, PhD; Carol Bates; Anthony Brunello; Robert Lamprecht; and Joseph Kelly–as well as our animated patients–for their contributions and expertise which resulted in a successful workshop. We would like to extend a special thanks to provider manual authors, Joseph Mistovich and Daniel Limmer, and to Stephen Smith at Prentice Hall Inc., for their contributions and support of the annual course and 3rd edition update.
The Committee has determined that there will be no mandated 3rd edition Update for Instructors, Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty due to no major changes to the textbook or Instructor/Coordinator manual content. All Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty will receive the current BLS and ALS written evaluations, along with a CD containing all course PowerPoint slides, a compendium of changes for the AMLS provider manual, course handouts, a verification form that Instructors have taught new materials, new drug mentions and an Instructor biographical update form by mail.
Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty will need to forward the compendium of changes, biographical and verification forms to all Instructors to review prior to teaching the new materials.
Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty must maintain the integrity of the course slides and written evaluations. All courses sites must teach the new materials by June 1, 2007. Please contact the AMLS Committee if you have any questions regarding the changes.
International course activity continues to increase. This fall, an inaugural course was held in Mexico City. Sweden and Saudi Arabia are scheduled to host their inaugural courses in the spring of 2007.
At the recommendation of the AMLS Committee, NAEMT has begun to utilize a software database to support the course examination process for continued validation and question bank.
What’s in the Future for AMLS?
A template is being designed to offer AMLS faculty the opportunity to contribute test questions. Current membership with NAEMT, along with current status as an AMLS instructor, cited textbook and course references, and verification that questions are original authorship will be some of the required components for submission.
Check out the Web site (www.naemt.org/amls) for the Regional Coordinator for your area.
CME applications for family practice physicians and registered nurses have been summated and are undergoing a beta process evaluation. Once the application and process have been approved, information will be available on the Web site for Course Coordinators.
The Master’s Series nears completion. This set of scenarios will include more complex differential diagnoses, lab values, X-rays and 12-lead ECG interpretation. We plan to add four new scenarios to the course. In an effort to answer the requests of our AMLS faculty, we will provide air-med and military scenarios.

AMLS Plans Third Edition Update
NAEMT and the AMLS Executive Committee will offer a 3rd revision AMLS Update that will complement the AMLS Instructor Course offered at the NAEMT Annual Meeting and EMS EXPO in Las Vegas. We encourage all AMLS Instructors, Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty to attend this session. The AMLS Executive Committee and AMLS textbook authors will present information on the changes with the 3rd edition materials. Instructor materials are available to participants at no cost, and textbooks will be available for purchase at a discounted price. Check out the NAEMT Web site, www.naemt.org, for registration information.
AMLS Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty who are unable to attend the September Update will receive correspondence on a compendium of changes for the course materials and textbook. Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty will be responsible for informing instructors of the new changes. Instructors, Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty should update their e-mail addresses with Keshia Robinson, NAEMT Office Coordinator, at keshia.robinson@naemt.org so this important correspondence can be forwarded promptly.
All AMLS 3rd edition materials must be utilized for Provider, Instructor and Refresher courses by June 1, 2007. Only AMLS Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty will receive the course slides, which are complimentary from NAEMT and the AMLS Executive Committee. If courses are using 3rd edition course textbooks, then the same edition of course slides and instructor materials must be used.
The third revision will offer new scenarios and scenario-based PowerPoint presentations with more challenging differential diagnoses. Scenarios include internationally recognized values for blood glucose levels, body weight and temperature. The instructor and refresher courses have also been revised.
We look forward to seeing our domestic and international colleagues at EMS EXPO in Las Vegas! —Linda M. Abrahamson, BA, RN, EMT-P, AMLS Chair

Newsletter - Summer, 2006
The AMLS Executive committee is pleased to report the continued growth of the AMLS course. This fall, the 3rd edition of the AMLS textbook and instructor/coordinator manual will be released. The AMLS national faculty will conduct a preconference workshop at EMS EXPO in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 25th and 26th. The 3rd revision of the materials will be used for this course and update on the revised materials will be provided at no cost, and includes the 3rd Edition Instructor materials compliments of Brady Publishing. Preregistration is required.
There are minor revisions in the science behind the AMLS philosophy. Therefore, minimal changes have been made to the AMLS course content, although we are excited that the instructor manual will offer new scenarios, an expanded administrative section and PowerPoint notes to accompany the revised lecture presentations. Course lecture presentations will be enhanced with ore scenario-based content. There will not be a mandatory Instructors, Course Coordinators or Affiliate Faculty Update/Workshop; however, there will be correspondence to all Instructors, Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty specifically stating the implementation timeframe.
All Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty will receive the NAEMT CD with the PowerPoint presentations, a summary of changes and the implementation timeframe. Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty are responsible for sharing the new information with your instructors as they assist you with your courses.
We hope to see you in Las Vegas in September!

The AMLS Executive Committee has some exciting news: The 3rd revision of the Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) textbook and the Advanced Medical Life Support Instructor/Coordinator Guide published by Prentice Hall, Inc. will be released in late September 2006. The materials will incorporate the current American Heart Association guidelines. There are many new scenarios and a new look to the interactive scenario-based Power Point presentations. The Committee will be developing revised pretests and post-tests to evaluate the changes.
The materials will be released at the annual conference at EMS Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada, in late September. Check out the NAEMT Web site for registration information. Instructors, Course Coordinators and Affiliate Faculty who are unable to attend the annual conference, will be sent correspondence on how and when to incorporate the 3rd edition materials. There will be no formal statewide mandated roll-outs of the revised materials.
Course activity continues to increase due to a greater number of paramedic education programs incorporating the provider course in the curriculum. The armed forces have incorporated the program in their training with great success.
International course activity continues to flourish. Norwegian Air Ambulance in Oslo, Norway, hosted their inaugural course in November 2005. Additional sites in Italy and an inaugural course in Mexico will be held in 2006.
The AMLS Executive Committee met for its midyear meeting in March in Chicago, Illinois. Work began on exam revision and the development of a three-year strategic plan. The Committee thanks all the AMLS instructors, course coordinators and affiliate faculty for their continued commitment to excellence in continuing education opportunities by offering this course to their local and state healthcare providers.

Newsletter - January/February 2006
AMLS had a very productive 2005. There are now more than 11,000 AMLS providers trained by 1,000 instructors. We have been honored to host inaugural courses in the following countries: Trinidad/Tobago, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Norway. Our international colleagues have continued to aggressively promote this educational opportunity in their countries. The number of programs offered in 2005 doubled those taught in 2004.
The AMLS Executive Committee would like to thank all of the NAEMT members, AMLS providers, instructors, course coordinators and affiliate faculty for their commitment to quality patient care by offering this interactive course to your healthcare providers.
AMLS has exciting news for 2006. The 3rd edition of the AMLS textbook authored by Alice L. Dalton, Joseph J. Mistovich, Daniel Limmer and Howard A. Werman, MD, will be available this fall. The Instructor Coordinator Guide will also implement changes for this 3rd edition. This instructor manual (IM) is authored by Linda Abrahamson, Rosemary Adam and Ann Bellows. AMLS committee member, John "Greg" Clarkes and NAEMT Office Coordinator Keshia Robinson have also made invaluable contributions to the IM. Watch for more details in early spring.
AMLS Provider courses are taught as a two-day scenario-based, interactive educational program. This course compliments the National DOT Paramedic curriculum and is accepted by the NREMT as continuing education for the medical component requirement.
Visit our Web site (www.naemt.org/amls/) for upcoming classes.
Best wishes for a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!

Email news from McGuire Airforce Base - sent by Joe Kelly, February 26th, 2006
Greetings Linda, Keshia & the AMLS EC!
I wanted to give you an update on our training site at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey. We began our quest in 2001 with investigation and group of us from the base attended an AMLS course in Elizabeth, NJ March 2002. We had a bit of exciting the night before the class in the parking lot of our hotel when we discovered a person in cardiac arrest and began BLS\CPR until EMS arrived. We assisted teaching a few classes that summer and in October 2002 we conducted our first AMLS Provider & Instructor Courses on base. To our knowledge this was the first AMLS program conducted in the US military. Our next course was not for a year later because of deployments related to Operation Enduring and Iraq Freedom.
Since then we have trained 108 AMLS students during 7 Provider courses over the following 3 years. We also trained 49 Instructor Candidates during 7 Instructor Workshops and assisted in 2 training sites starting AMLS programs. Both military and civilian students have come from all over the country to attend our courses. Our program runs two and half days starting Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. The extra time allows for more practical skills stations, lecture, and discussion time. In addition to AMLS we conduct PHTLS, PPC, ACLS, and NREMT courses during the year on base. Our new 5000 Sq.Ft. training facility is almost completed and we should be teaching classes there by FY07 which starts this October.
Attached to this email is a group picture of the students and instructions along with a picture from a skills station. If you have any questions please let me know!
Thank you and have a great day!
Joe
