What a tremendous success! Congratulations to the 50 participants in the AMLS provider and instructor preconference workshop in Atlanta. We appreciate all who participated in the program, especially our military personnel and those who traveled from Norway and Trinidad. The AMLS Executive Committee faculty and our volunteer patients contributed to the success of this interactive continuing education program. Thanks to Eugene Maxey at Moore Medical and Jack Mundy at the Georgia State EMS office for their assistance in providing the medical equipment necessary to enhance the scenarios.
The AMLS Refresher Course has been approved for continuing education credits at the advanced level. The AMLS Committee has applied for continuing education credits for the basic level to accommodate providers in states which only accept CME at the level in which they are licensed.
AMLS will celebrate its sixth year in 2005. Currently, more than 10,000 providers are recognized in AMLS, 1,050 instructors and 80 affiliate faculty throughout the country and abroad. Forty states and five foreign countries currently offer AMLS programs. Norway, Trinidad, the United Kingdom, China and Mexico will be adding the course for their healthcare providers in 2005. We welcomed West Virginia, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii.
The Committee is preparing for a third revision of program and materials to be complete in 2006. The course slides, textbook and coordinator's guide will all undergo revisions. The Master's level is under development and will encompass scenarios with 12-lead EKG, lab values and x-ray interpretation. Consideration is being given to prerequisites for challenging this component. We are pursuing online components to the course and Master's series. We would appreciate your input as a healthcare provider or educator on how online products will accommodate your needs. You can comment by sending an e-mail response to Keshia Robinson, AMLS coordinator at keshia.robinson@naemt.org
We would also like to congratulate AMLS Executive Committee member, John Greg Clarkes on his receipt of the NAEMT Mary Ann Talley Instructor/Coordinator of the Year Award.
We wish you all a blessed and happy holiday season!

AMLS welcomes the state of Washington with a new AMLS course site in Vancouver! The AMLS executive committee held its mid-year meeting and hosted a provider/instructor program at Clark County EMS in Vancouver, Washington, in July. Nathan Williams, past president of NAEMT and Keshia Robinson, NAEMT AMLS coordinator, were present at the meeting, and Heather Tucker served as the course coordinator. Educators from Trinidad participated in the course in an effort to improve prehosptial patient care in their country. They plan to host the inaugural course in late 2004.
The number of participants continues to increase. With four months to go in 2004, the number of participants has already equaled the number from 2003. There are currently 8,879 recognized AMLS providers, 1,050 instructors and 74 affiliate faculty.
Sites that began teaching AMLS in their states since teh annual meeting in 2003 are: Washington, Indiana, Oregon, Georgia, Hawaii and Massachusetts. The executive committee is seeking sites that are interested in hosting the course in the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. Please contact Keshia Robinson at keshia.robinson@naemt.org or Linda Abrahamson at lmaedu@ameritech.net if you are interested in hosting a provider/instructor program in your area.
The AMLS provider course has completed the validation of the pre and post test written evaluations for the BLS and ALS levels. The new written evaluations will be piloted in the annual conference in Atlanta in October 2004. New master's level scenarios are being developed for those sites wishing greater challenges! These more complex scenarios will include x-ray interpretation, lab values and 12-lead EKG evaluation.
AMLS continues to have interest abroad. Hong Kong is planning a course in 2005. Portugal, Norway, France, Switzerland, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, Trinidad and Greece are all pursuing bringing the course to their countries.
Register early for the AMLS provider/instructor course in Atlanta. We look forward to seeing you there!

The city of Vancouver, Washington and the Northwest Regional Training Center (NWRTC) was pleased to welcome the AMLS Executive Council in July. Members attending the mid-year meeting were: Linda Abrahamson (chair), Keshia Robinson (AMLS coordinator), John Greg Clarkes, Ann Bellows and Rosemary Adam. The meeting was followed by an AMLS provider/instructor course, also hosted by the NWRTC, and taught by the Executive Council members.
Clark County is bringing Advanced Medical Life Support to the state of Washington to complete the West Coast lineup, joining California and Oregon. The Northwest Regional Training Center (NWRTC), a Division of Clark County Fire District #5, began Emergency Medical Service (EMS) education in June of 2000. Offering both initial education (EMT-Basic, EMT-IV Tech, and EMT-Paramedic) and continuing education (PHTLS, GEMS, and PEPP) the training center strives to serve both metro and rural communities locally and throughout the state of Washington. NWRTC is also an AHA Training Center with course offerings in all 3 disciplines: BLS, ACLS, and PALS.
Clark County and the NWRTC are teaming up with the nation of Trinidad in their mission to further EMS education. Getting their EMS start in 1999, Trinidad already offers PHTLS and sent five members of their EMS community (including medical director Ian Sammy, M.D.) to attend the July AMLS Provider/Instructor course. The Trinidad EMS system currently is at the EMT-Basic level and is seeking to further their training and skill level to offer advanced life support to its population and visitors. Trinidad responds to more than 40,000 EMS calls per year. The NWRTC is proud to welcome and extend our EMS family to the nation of Trinidad.

"Fantastic" "Terrific!" "Wonderful" were the comments from students who attended the first AMLS course in Oregon. Metro West ambulance brought AMLS to Hillsboro, Oregon, in February 2004. The 18 paramedics who attended the course are the leaders at Metro West, and each has extensive field experience. They found national faculty members Linda Abrahamson, Rosie Adam and Greg Clarkes, and Metro West AMLS affiliate faculty member Victor Hoffer to be outstanding, and the content of the course to be excellent, according to post-course evaluations.
A summer leadership course led by Metro West Chief of Operations Larry Boxman led to a 2004 training schedule with emphasis on advanced learning. AMLS fit the need. Training task force members Victor Hoffer, Janet Weiser, Bill Wildman and Greg Lovell were instrumental in making AMLS the lead course offering of 2004.
"The best and the brightest paramedics attended this first Oregon class." Hoffer said. "These are the hardest medics to please because they are experienced and well educated. Despite the medics' level of experience", Hoffer added, "The consensus was that this course was the very best in continuing education."

The AMLS Executive Committee is very excited about the launch of the NAEMT Education Program software. [see http://www.naemt.org/software]
The AMLS Executive Committee is working hard to promote AMLS in states nor currently offering courses. Victor Hoffer, with the cooperation of Executive Committee members, hosted Oregon's inaugural provider and instructor course in Portland in February. The US Army also is planning courses in several locations this year. If you are interested in hosting an AMLS course in your area, contact the NAEMT office at (800) 34-NAEMT.
The Executive Committee is also busy developing a Master's Level series of scenarios for the next AMLS Instructor/Coordinator Guide. New diagnostic information will be added, including lab work interpretation, x-rays and 12-Lead EKGs. Scenarios will be revised to reflect more consistent, internationally relevant terminology.
AMLS instructors, course coordinators an affiliate faculty who wish to retain their AMLS credentials must teach at least one course using the second revision materials by April 30th, 2004. An instructor verification form must be signed by an affiliate faculty member or a course coordinator and mailed with post-course paperwork to the NAEMT office. Instructors who have submitted completed verification forms will receive new AMLS cards.
