Dr. McSwain and how PHTLS was developed.
Norman E. McSwain, Jr, MD, FACS, NREMT-P, is a Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship at Bowman-Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and chief residency at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. McSwain has a long interest in trauma and prehospital care and is presently Director of Trauma for Tulane University and the Associate Trauma Director for the Level I Trauma Center at Charity Hospital New Orleans.
Dr. McSwain is the Founder and Medical Director for Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS). This programme was developed in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma. Dr. McSwain has been a member of the American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma since 1979 and has held position as both state chairman and liason member. Since 1983, more than 300,000 prehospital professionals have been trained in PHTLS, in the United States and over 25 other countries.
Dr. McSwain was Medical Director of the Tulane University Hospital Emergency Department for 15 years and is the Chairman of Emergency Services at Tulane Hospital for more than 22 years. He is a member of a number of surgical societies including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST), Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM), American Surgical Association (ASA), Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), and the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). He has served as officer in most of these organizations.
The author or coauthor of more than 317 published articles, 35 audiovisuals, 24 books and book revisions, and 93 book chapters; Dr. McSwain has spent more than 30 years with a major interest in trauma surgery, resuscitation recovery and prehospital care. |
