Newsletter 2001 (Archived)

News from the Chair: November/December 2002 - by Chief Will Chapleau (posted December 9th, 2002)

The new 5th Edition of PHTLS provides scientific support for the philosophy and practice of PHTLS and, for the first time, stresses principles of prehospital care as well as trauma prevention. The 5th edition CDROM in every textbook gives providers an opportunity to review skills and perform self-evaluations. The Instructor Materials and Power Point presentation help make PHTLS courses consistent all over the world. The Merlin Web site provided by Mosby will be another resource for providers and faculty and will be a place to find research materials and presentations.

The number of PHTLS courses offered this year should exceed last year's 1,752, and the total number of PHTLS trained providers also is expected to surpass the 23,535 trained last year. By the end of this year, PHTLS will have trained over 350,000 providers in 28 countries, including the US, Bolivia, Venezuela, Denmark, Uruguay, Portugal, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Columbia, Brazil, Argentina, Trinidad & Tobago, Chile, England, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, China, Australia, Bulgaria and Macedonia. Teams from Peru, Japan and France have received initial training in the US and will come on board soon. Oswaldo Rois, MD, is working on development with groups in Costa Rica and Paraguay, and discussions are ongoing in Poland, Spain, Germany and Hungary.

In the US, new faculty has been trained in Utah, Wyoming, Alabama, California and Mississippi. Canada has seen Ontario join Alberta, Quebec and the Northwest territories. Thanks to Greg Clarkes for developing new sites in provinces where PHTLS was not available. The 4th edition of PHTLS outsold the 3rd edition by more than 20 percent, and the 4th edition Instructor Materials outsold the 3rd edition by about 70 percent. Two PHTLS International Symposiums (Symposium 2000; Symposium 2001) have been held, and while we haven't had huge participation, the sessions were well received, and there is interest by conference professionals in reaching a larger audience. Last, but certainly not least, the PHTLS Web site had become an incredible resource thanks to the tireless efforts of Mary-Ann Clarkes, who continues to build in new features. Military Workgroup (posted October 23rd, 2002)

The Military division of PHTLS, under the direction of MSgt John P. Weber, has initiated a working group with a mandate to develop scenarios and supportive materials specific to the situations found and equipment used within the military arena.

Materials developed by military stakeholders from across the country will also be utilized. For further information on this project, please contact MSgt Weber.

PHTLSInternational Meeting Report - Outlook 2002 in Nashville - by Will Chapleau, PHTLS Chair (posted October 5th, 2002)

With the release of the 5th edition, PHTLS continues to grow not just as an educational program but as a group of prehospital care professionals that will be having positive effects on prehospital trauma care long after most of us have moved on to other things.

Even in the last year of the 4th edition, course numbers should exceed last years 1,752 and the number of trained should surpass the 23,535 trained last year. By the end of this year PHTLS will have trained over 350,000 providers in 28 countries.

The support given our faculty and providers by the 5th edition materials is stronger than ever. The text provides scientific support for the philosophy and practice of PHTLS and for the first time stresses principles of prehospital care as well as trauma prevention. The 5th edition CD ROM enclosed in every text also give the providers an opportunity to review skills as well as the written material and to perform self evaluations prior to attending the course. The IM and power-point presentation continue to improve in enhancing our presentations and helping PHTLS courses to be consistent all over the world. The Merlin website provided by MOSBY will be another resource for providers and faculty alike and will be a place where thinks like research material can be found and prevention presenting for our faculty to share with their communities.

Our international group saw Bolivia, Venezuela, Denmark, Uruguay and Portugal join the US, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Columbia, Brazil, Argentina, Trinidad & Tobago, Chile, England, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, China and Australia. In Eastern Europe we have trained providers in Bulgaria and Macedonia.

Teams from Peru, Japan and France have received initial training in the US and hope to join us soon. Dr. Oswaldo Rois is working on development with groups in Costa Rica and Paraguay. We are also talking with Poland, Spain, Germany and Hungary. We are also investigating possibilities in Africa and Asia.

We are still expanding our US base as well with new faculty in Utah, Wyoming, Alabama, California and Mississippi. Canada has seen Ontario join Alberta, Quebec and the Northwest Territories. We are working on Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Thanks to Greg Clarkes for his work in developing new sites in provinces where PHTLS is not available.

The 4th edition of PHTLS outsold the 3rd edition by over 20% with the 4th edition IM outsold the 3rd edition by 70%. Early indications are that the 5th edition will be even more successful.

We've conducted 2 PHTLS International symposiums and while we haven't had large groups yet, the sessions were well received and there is interest by conference professionals in helping us to reach larger audiences.

The PHTLS website has become an incredible resource. While we've recognized Mary-Ann Clarkes in the past for her work on the site, she continues to build in new features and keep the page responsive to the needs of our family of faculty and providers.

Respectfully submitted,
Will Chapleau, PHTLS Chair

ThePHTLS Executive Council releases plans to pilot a new Trauma Instructor Transitional Program (posted Sept.23rd, 2002)

Just weeks before the initial 5th Edition Text Roll-Out, the PHTLS Executive Council has released new plans to pilot a special Instructor program. The Trauma Instructor Transitional program is geared to accommodate those individuals who hold Instructor status in a recognized continuing education trauma programme, and who want to make the change and join the annals of PHTLS Faculty from around the world. It is designed to take advantage of the participants present teaching experience and talents while exposing them to the necessary skills, philosophies and administrative practice that are unique to PHTLS.

National Faculty will be providing details of this new program at the Outlook 2002/EMS Today conference in Nashville during the scheduled 5th Edition Roll-Out on October 2nd, 2002.

Educational Institutions who are interested in further information on this important program can contact Derek Hanson for sites West of the Mississippi, Nita Ham for sites East of the Mississippi, and Chief Will Chapleau for all International sites.

Newsfrom the Chair: September/October/ 2002 - by Chief Will Chapleau (posted September 23rd, 2002)

The 5th edition of the PHTLS textbook has arrived! We're very happy with the latest version of PHTLS. The text and the course have evolved with advances in science and input from PHTLS providers all over the world. As we reported to you in previous newsletters, the whole book has been updated. New to the 5th edition are the CD-ROM with video clips and reviews, chapters on Injury Prevention, Triage-Transport and Trauma Systems, golden principles, five new algorithms on assessment, indications for spinal immobilization, shock management, head trauma, recommendations for cessation and/or withholding resuscitation, drug tables of commonly used drugs and other enhancements such as new photos and artwork. The Refresher course has be revised to be more scenario-based (like the Provider course), and all of the slides have been revised and updated.

We've been telling you about the rollout of the 5th edition at the NAEMT EMS EXPO/OUTLOOK in Nashville. We hope you have made your plans to be with us on October 2nd and stay with us for the rest of the conference.

While at the conference, we'd like our faculty from all over the world to join us at the annual PHTLS Division meeting to be held on October 3rd from 8 am to 11 am.

Later that night, we will host the First Annual Scott B. Frame Memorial Lecture at 7 pm. There will be no charge for the lecture that is funded by donations to the Scott B. Frame Memorial Educational Fund.

In June, Uruguay joined the ever-growing PHTLS family. Portugal is slated to begin courses in September, and we hope to get Peru, Costa Rica and France into the family before the end of the year. We are still working with Japan, Israel, Korea and Spain to get things going in the future.

There has been a tremendous amount of new activity in North America with new sites in Wyoming, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois and in Alberta and Ontario in Canada. The meeting in Nashville looks like it will be our biggest gathering of faculty ever, and we look forward to seeing many of you there.

PHTLSCourse Evaluation, Queensland, Austrailia (posted August 31st, 2002)

A grant from the Motor Accidents Insurance Commission (MAIC) to the Australian Center for Prehospital Research (ACPHR) will enable an evaluation of the Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course in Australia.

The evaluation will provide a broader understanding of the management of patients with traumatic injury in the State and assist us in our ongoing improvement of delivery of the course in Queensland.

In particular, the impact of the PHTLS on the management of severe injury in rural and remote areas will be examined.

A team of researchers from ACPHR has begun working with the Queensland Health PHTLS directorate to develop a clear understanding of the course content and purpose.

Team will seek to interview and survey a representative sample of past graduates and Instructors from the Program.

The evaluation is an important opportunity for the Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support Course program to demonstrate its impact on patient care trajectories and outcomes.

News from the Chair: July/August 2002 - by Chief Will Chapleau (posted July 22nd, 2002)

PHTLS continues to grow, nationally and internationally. Even in the months immediately preceding the July release of the 5th Edition, enrollment has been on the rise. If the history of previous releases is any indication, we can expect even more interest in the course after the rollout of the new materials at the annual meeting October 1-5 in Nashville. We anticipate that faculty all over the world will have access to updates within six months of the October rollout. Faculty from the United States, Canada, Panama, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, England, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia and Portugal have already committed to the October rollout plan.

In addition to increasing enrollment, the number of courses in the US and Canada are growing in part because new course sites have been added in previously under-served areas in Alabama, Wyoming, Utah, California and Ontario. Additional international growth is anticipated when we launch courses later this year in Portugal, Peru, Spain, Japan and France. Discussions have begun with Germany and Hungary to start PHTLS courses in those nations.

The information below summarizes our growth:

2000

2001

Number of PHTLS Courses

1,492

1,704

Number of students trained

20,951

We hope that all faculty members are making plans to join us for the 5th Edition update in Nashville at the EMS EXPO/OUTLOOK conference. The update will be on Wednesday, October 2nd and the annual International Faculty Meeting will be on Thursday, October 3rd.

Midyear Report from the Chair: May 2002 - by Chief Will Chapleau (posted May 7th, 2002)

As we near the release of the 5th edition text and approach the midyear meeting where we will finalize plans for the roll-out, PHTLS continues to grow.

Course numbers and the number of providers trained is still rising. We anticipate getting the updates to most of the course sites within 6 months of the release of materials and I believe this will fuel continued growth.

Our International group saw Bolivia, Venezuela and Denmark join the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Panama, Columbia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, China and Australia.

Teams from Peru, Portugal and France have received initial training in the U.S. and hope to join us later this year. Peru has requested dates in August and Portugal is hoping for September. Dr. Oswaldo Rois is working on development with groups in Costa Rica, Paraguay and Uruguay. I have also begun discussion with Poland and Spain. Last week, I met with Irvene Hughes, ATLS Director for ACS, and teams from Germany and Hungary.

We are still expanding our U.S. base as wel,l with new faculty in Utah, Wyoming, Alabama, California and Mississippi.

Canada has seen Ontario join Alberta, Quebec and the Northwest Territories; we're working on Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

Courses for 2001 total 1704, which is a 14% increase. The 22,819 providers trained represent a 15% increase over last year. The 322,819th provider was trained, since our inception.

The 83,000 copies of the 4th edition textbook sold represent an increase of 19% over the 3rd edition and it's still selling. We sold 10,000 copies of the Instructor Manual (IM), a 67% increase over the 3rd edition IM and still selling.

We've conducted 2 PHTLS International Symposiums (Chicago & North Dakota). And while we haven't had large groups yet, the sessions were well received and there is interest by conference professionals in helping us to reach a larger audience.

All PHTLS faculty will need to be updated to the 5th edition materials so make plans to be with us at EMS EXPO/NAEMT Outlook in Nashville on October 2nd to 5th. The PHTLS 5th edition roll-out will be on Wednesday, October 2nd, and the annual International Faculty meeting will be held on Thursday, October 3rd, 2002, 08:00-11:00 hrs. We also will have the Scott Frame memorial lecture on Thursday, October 3rd, 2002, 19:00 hrs.

News from the Chair: March/April 2002 - by Chief Will Chapleau (posted April 30th, 2002)

The Fifth Edition of PHTLS remains on track to rollout at the EMS EXPO & OUTLOOK Conference on October 2, 2002 in Nashville. The textbook is completed, and the slides and instructor materials are in final review. The Fifth Edition material will include more emphasis on prevention, and new audiovisual aides with links to additional instructional material available on the Web. The rollout session will describe all of the new materials and resources in the Fifth Edition and help instructors learn to use them effectively. We look forward to seeing you there.

The Fifth Edition is being translated into Spanish and is expected to be available in 2003. Translations of the Fifth Edition also are being planned for Hebrew and Cantonese. An Italian version of the Fourth Edition is available now.

As for our overseas courses, PHTLS debuted in Denmark in January, and that country has a full course schedule in place for 2002. Representatives from Portugal and France are in the United States, where they are meeting with PHTLS representatives to set up courses in those nations. Countries that have expressed interest in the course and with which we are engaged in ongoing talks include Israel, Peru, South Africa, Japan, Costa Rica and Ecuador.

On the home front, inaugural courses were held in February at UCLA and at the Los Angeles County and City Fire Departments. The PHTLS course at UCLA is being offered as part of its paramedic program, and LA City Fire plans to train 3,500 firefighter/medics through its program.

News from the Chair: January/February 2002 - by Chief Will Chapleau (posted Feb26th, 2002)

PHTLS has finished another year of solid growth. We ran over 1700 courses in 25 countries and trained around 30,000 providers (numbers still coming in). The PHTLS family continues to grow with new course activity throughout the US with new course sites in nearly every state including Alabama. The international community now includes Canada, Mexico, Panama, Columbia, Venezuela, Bolivia (new in 2001), Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Ireland, England, Denmark (new January 2002), Sweden, Norway, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Saudi Arabia, China, Australia, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago. We will continue with demonstration courses in Macedonia and Bulgaria and hope to run courses in Croatia and Nigeria in the coming year. We also hope to bring Portugal, Costa Rica, Peru, Israel, Ecuador and Japan into the group in the coming year.

The latest countries to join us are Venezuela and Denmark. The first Venezuelan courses, under the direction of Dr. Enrique Montbrun and Dr. Jesus Diaz, were conducted in November in Caracas. The faculty consisted of physicians, nurses and paramedics from hospital, private and fire based systems. Plans are in place for training to run at a feverish pace to get the course throughout Venezuela in short order.

The first courses in Denmark were run in January 2002. Dr. Claus Falck Larsen, Kim Garde & Peter Werner Jensen coordinated this effort. It is expected that course activity will be heavy here as it has been made mandatory for all prehospital care providers in Denmark to take the course.

The 5th edition is building up to its debut at the EMS EXPO/Outlook conference in Nashville in October. Make your plans now to be there for the roll-out. The new text, slides and support materials will be ready at that time. All of the existing materials have been updated and there are many new features too
