Sylvia Mathews Burwell Confirmed as HHS Secretary
Jun 06, 2014
On June 5, the Senate confirmed Sylvia Mathews Burwell as the next secretary of Health and Human Services by a vote of 78 to 17. President Obama nominated her for the post back in April after outgoing secretary Kathleen Sebelius (D-Ohio) announced her resignation.
Prior to her confirmation, Ms. Burwell served as the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Shaun Donovan (D-N.Y.), the current secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), has been nominated to replace her in that role.
