Help Protect EMS Practitioners. Report Safety Incidents Anonymously to EVENT.

Oct 25, 2016

In so many ways, EMS is more than a profession. It is a mission, a calling and a passion. Our EMS colleagues are much more than our co-workers - they form our "work family."

Each of us has a responsibility to protect ourselves and our EMS colleagues from harmful or violent situations, and to reduce medical errors that may compromise the care we provide to our patients.

The online EMS Voluntary Event Notification Tool (E.V.E.N.T.) is an easy way to anonymously report errors involving patient safety, near misses and practitioner violence. Here is one excerpt from a recent report of violence against one of our colleagues:
"...While preparing to RSI the patient due to combativeness and the extent of his injury, the patient stated, "if you intubate me I will kill you."

When you submit an incident to E.V.E.N.T. and encourage colleagues to do so, you contribute greater understanding of how adverse incidents affect both patients and practitioners. By studying the data from the reports submitted, industry leaders and policy makers can better assess risky situations, understand the causes of medical errors, and develop policies, practices and resources in response.
