Paul Hinchey began his career in EMS in 1986 as a volunteer EMT for his local community ambulance service and became a paramedic in 1989. In 1990, he became an EMS educator and an advocate for the advancement and standardization of EMS education. After several years in EMS education he chose to pursue additional training as a physician, completing the combined MB/MBA program at the State University of New York School of Medicine and School of Business. While in training he continued his involvement with EMS and emergency medicine while focusing his business interests in process development and redesign. 

Dr. Hinchey completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina where he served as Chief Resident and continued as an EMS Fellow working with both the Orange County and Wake County EMS systems. After fellowship, Dr. Hinchey continued as the Assistant Medical Director for Wake County EMS with an interest in special operations including USAR, Tactical EMS and mass gathering medicine. He also became the Medical Director for the WakeMed Health and Hospitals Mobile Critical Care Service in Raleigh, North Carolina, supervising the air and ground critical care teams. 

In addition to speaking nationally on EMS related topics, Dr. Hinchey has also been involved in EMS related research with areas of interest that include the development of pre-hospital induced hypothermia for post cardiac arrest victims, pre-hospital resuscitation, quality assurance, process engineering and the use of simulation in pre-hospital emergency medicine. 

In addition to his role as the Medical Director for NAEMT, he has served as an American College of Emergency Physicians representative on EMS workforce issues, and is an ACEP representative to the Board of Directors for the CoAEMSP. He is a member of the National Association of EMS Physicians, Air Medical Physician Association, North Carolina Tactical EMS Association and the Greater Raleigh Emerald Society.  Most recently, Dr. Hinchey became the Medical Director for Austin/Travis County EMS in Austin, Texas, effective September 2009.
