NAEMT Director Testifies Before Congress on First Responder Bill

Advocating for passage of H.R. 1544, NAEMT Director Gregg C. Lord testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee in Washington, DC, on Thursday, April 14. Introduced by Homeland Security Committee Chairman Christopher Cox (R-CA) and Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), the legislation, called the Faster and Smarter Funding for First Responders Act of 2005, targets first responder funding where it can most effectively reduce the risk of terrorist attack.

"The importance of this legislation to local emergency responders cannot be overemphasized,” said Lord, who is also vice chairman of the NAEMT Administrators Division and division chief of EMS for Cherokee County (Georgia) Fire. “Passage of the bill will bring coherence to the grant process and ensure that the allocated funds quickly and efficiently get down to where it is needed, the local emergency response organizations.”

Testifying along with Chief Lord were representatives from the IAFF, the Fraternal Order of Police and the grassroots group, "Voices of 9-11."  The bill is moving rapidly and is expected to get to a vote within the month.
