Motivational Interviewing is a 6-hour interactive classroom course designed to introduce paramedics to the core concepts of motivational interviewing, social and cultural determinants of health, theory of change, SMART goals, and both why and how to establish professional boundaries with patients.

- The Spirit of Motivational Interviewing
- Active Listening
- Ambivalence and Resistance
- Setting Goals and Problem Solving
The recommended textbook for this course is Community Health Paramedicine, Jones & Bartlett Learning.
Motivational Interviewing may be taught as a stand-alone course, or as a component of NAEMT’s Community Paramedicine curriculum.
This course may be offered to all paramedics and other out-of-hospital healthcare providers.
