Engage Your Members of Congress at Home in August

Jul 30, 2012

Take advantage of the August Congressional District Work Period, August 6-31, by connecting with your U.S. House Representative and Senators while they are in your area.

1. Schedule a meeting with your Congressional representatives in their district offices. Locate their offices and phone number via NAEMT’s Capwiz Online Legislative Service.

2. Invite your members of Congress and their district staff for a tour of your EMS agency or a ride-along.

3. Check the web sites of your members of Congress, call their offices, or review local news coverage to obtain their public appearance schedules. Attend a town hall meeting or introduce yourself during a public appearance.

4. Invite your members of Congress to a meeting of your EMS agency, local EMS Council or state EMS association.

5. Submit editorial columns or letters to the editors of your larger local newspapers that your Congressional representatives read.

6. Present your Congressional representatives with awards for their support of EMS.

7. Join your local, state and national professional association to stay informed on advocacy issues. NAEMT's State Advocacy Coordinators help keep you engaged on federal EMS advocacy issues, and assist with scheduling and conducting meetings with your Members of Congress.

8. Utilize and become familiar with various advocacy resources, like Capwiz, to follow currently introduced legislation and obtain information on your members of Congress.
